Qeej, Student Production

This short video explores the cultural and personal significance of the Qeej, a traditional Hmong musical instrument. Through interviews and performances, it highlights the instrument’s role in rituals, storytelling, and cultural preservation. The video delves into how the Qeej connects individuals to their heritage, serving as a symbol of identity and a means of passing down traditions across generations.

This film was created in an after-school course for East High School English Language Learner students. Students received professional guidance from Story Works and See Stories to create short cultural films and stories on topics ranging from boxing to cooking, and from family stories to fasting for Ramadan. This project was generously funded by the Alaska State Council on the Arts Cultural Heritage Grant, East High School, and the Anchorage School District.
