Manaq in Akiak

The film focuses on the significance of Manaq, a traditional practice deeply rooted in Alaska Native culture. Manaq, the Yup’ik word for fishing, is more than just a way to provide sustenance; it represents a connection to ancestral knowledge, community bonding, and the preservation of cultural traditions. Through the practice of Manaq, elders pass down essential skills and values to younger generations, fostering respect for the land, the waters, and the resources they provide.

This film was produced from the DEED After School Programs led by teachers across Alaska during the 2023-2024 school year and featured at the See Stories 2024 Afterschool Programs Film Festival.
