Local Foods in Lunches

Local Food in Lunches” showcases two programs that are serving local food to Kodiak students. Land and sea are represented as it explores the local middle school’s agriculture program growing food to send to the cafeteria as well as Kodiak Seiners Association’s successful implementation of local salmon in school lunches.
This film was created at See Stories’ Professional Development Retreat for Educators in Homer Alaska, in June 2024 as part of the Digital Storytelling as a Culturally Responsive Teaching Tool course.

Essential Questions
- Where does my food come from? Why does it matter?
- What is the importance/benefit of eating locally grown and harvested food?
- What are the challenges of eating locally grown and harvested food?
- How can we create a local food system that is sustainable and beneficial to our community?
Standards
- Geography A: make and use maps, globes, and graphs to gather, analyze, and report spatial (geographic) information
- Geography E: Evaluate how humans and physical environments interact. GE1: understand how resources have been developed and used GE2: recognize and assess local, regional, and global patterns of resource use
- History D2: solve problems by using history to identify issues and problems, generate potential solutions, assess the merits of options, act, and evaluate the effectiveness of actions
- C3Framework: D2.Geo.4. Explain how culture influences the way people modify and adapt to their environments. D2.Geo.7. Explain how cultural and environmental characteristics affect the distribution and movement of people, goods, and ideas.
- CA2: The educator integrates and connects traditions, customs, values, and practices of the students when interacting with new content.
- CB1: The educator has a planning process that incorporates the linking of the local environment, community resources, and issues to instructional content.
