It’s Time For Movie Monday!

It’s time for Movie Monday! Movie Monday is a new feature as a part of See Stories where each Monday we’ll showcase a student or educator-produced film from one of our workshops and invite you to join the discussion! Head to @seestoriesalaska on Facebook and tell us your thoughts on the featured film or leave a comment on this post.
This week we are highlighting a film from Gambell educator, Janine Banguanga.
Siberian Yupik Language: Moving Onwards is a film that explores the importance of keeping the Yupigestun (Siberian Yupik) language alive. Spoken by roughly 1,000 people on St. Lawrence Island, the language is deeply tied to cultural identity and knowledge. This film is a call to action for language preservation and encourages younger generations to embrace and use their native language. Watch the film here on our website (or click on the still below) and join the discussion!
The Siberian Yupik language is an integral part of the identity and history of St. Lawrence Island. Through songs, stories, and everyday use, speakers keep this language alive despite challenges. Let’s talk about the importance of language preservation and how we can contribute.
- Why do you think language preservation is important?
- How can we encourage younger generations to keep their language alive?
- How can language preservation stay strong, especially in today’s digital world?
