See Stories Virtual Film Festival: Showcasing Alaska’s Youth Voices

On December 5th, 2024, See Stories proudly hosted our Virtual Youth Film Festival, celebrating the creativity and storytelling talents of students from across Alaska. This exciting event, funded by the Department of Education, featured two screenings and highlighted a diverse array of student-made films that reflected the rich cultures and unique perspectives of Alaskan youth.

The festival culminated in the announcement of three outstanding films:

1st Place: “Manaq in Akiak, Alaska” by Sonya Jackson (5th Grade), Abrielle Ayagaleria (9th Grade), and Cody Jackson from Akiak, under the guidance of teachers Cindy Strotman and Alberta Demantle. The film was recognized for its exceptional b-roll footage and engaging narration.

2nd Place: “Shggagwei” by James Reddick, a 4th grader from Skagway, mentored by teacher Danielle McManus. This film stood out for its use of traditional language, a relaxing and comfortable pace, and the incorporation of youth voices.

3rd Place: “Filipino Life and Culture” by Jenica Fernandez, a 10th grader from Sitka, guided by teacher Betty Richter. The film was celebrated for its strong technical production, impressive editing with captions, and an engaging story that highlights Filipino culture.

As we look to the future, See Stories is excited to continue growing this event. While the virtual festival was a success, our vision includes hosting in-person film festivals in the coming years. These gatherings will bring students, educators, and community members together to celebrate the art of storytelling on a larger scale, fostering deeper connections and sharing Alaska’s diverse narratives with broader audiences.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Department of Education for their support in making this event possible and to all the students and teachers who participated. Your stories inspire and enrich our understanding of Alaska’s unique and vibrant communities.
