December 2, 2024

It’s time for Movie Monday! Movie Monday is a new feature, a part of See Stories where each Monday we’ll showcase a student or educator-produced film from one of our workshops and invite you to join the discussion! Head to @seestoriesalaska on Facebook and tell us your thoughts on the featured film or leave a comment on this post.

This summer, educators from across the state gathered for a one week intensive to master the art of creating culturally responsive films at our Ageya Intensive Retreat in Homer, Alaska. This professional development experience, a part of our Culturally Responsive Teaching and Alaska Studies Professional Development, integrates Alaska’s rich history, culturally responsive teaching, and a trauma-informed approach to education and teaching in Alaskan communities. Each educator who participated in this workshop produced a film to be able to teach the process to the students in their communities. (And if you haven’t watched the film on this retreat by Bitanga Productions, watch it here.)

This Movie Monday, we are featuring a short film by Bjorn Paje an educator in Stebbins. His film, Stebbins Yup’ik Beats, takes viewers on a journey into the heart of Yupik culture, celebrating the power of dance, song, and storytelling to preserve traditions and connect generations. “Stebbins Yup’ik Beats” explores the origins of Stebbins Yup’ik songs, their composition and performance, and the community’s unifying efforts to uphold their traditions and invite other villages to participate in their celebrations. Rooted in the practices of the Yup’ik people, the film highlights how songs are composed to honor personal achievements or significant life events. These songs often mimic the movements of animals such as birds and seals, reflecting the deep connection between the Yupik community and the natural world. Dance brings these stories to life, combining rhythm and motion to create a powerful visual and emotional narrative. This film features interviews with village elder Morris Nashoanak Sr. and Blaine, a Filipino teen who recently moved to Stebbins.

With vivid imagery and heartfelt stories, Yup’ik Beats reminds us of the enduring power of cultural heritage. It is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the timeless connection between people, their environment, and their shared stories.

Dive into this incredible cultural journey, and be inspired by the beauty of Yupik traditions that continue to thrive in the Stebbins community. Watch the film here on our website (or click on the still below) and join the discussion!
